I have recently enjoyed Elizabeth Gilbert’s best-selling, soul-searching book, Eat, Pray, Love. “The blue pearl,” I learned from the author, is an actual gathering of energy that appears in the minds of high-level meditation practitioners during states of deep, complete peace. It is said to be a physical manifestation of the soul and union with the Divine. The idea is so beautiful; I have been pondering in wonderment that such a state has been universally experienced and expressed by spiritual teachers, monks and students. A magical wishbone and a Blue Pearl float in this square artwork together to validate the funny workings of my mind; I have unconsciously put the physical and tangible next to the immaterial and intangible. Yet the wishbone is symbolic of fulfillment of dreams (hard to physically touch), and the Blue Pearl, a seemingly slippery concept, is associated with the soul’s actual “appearance.” An element does not exist without its opposition, and in fact, yin and yang yearn for each other - the Beauty and Challenge of Life. Polymer medium, marble powder, powdered pigment, metallic gold leaf, copper leaf, and patinas on 140 lb. rough watercolor paper.
