The original rainbow pride flag was created in 1978 by queer artist Gilbert Baker, who was based in San Francisco. It had 8 colors with meanings assigned to each one: Pink stood for sex. Red represented life. Orange was for healing. Yellow meant sunlight. Green represented nature. Turquoise stood for magic. Indigo was for harmony. Violet meant spirit.
I never knew about these corresponding meanings, and the exercise of honoring the colors of Pride in solidarity with beautiful and brilliant human beings has been invaluable to me.
